Speaking of silent reading last night I finished 'Mrs Dalloway' by Virginia Woolf. Fully as annoying as I'd expected (though I was prejudiced at a young age by my love for Wyndham Lewis who said she was a shallow dilettante whose moneyed circle elbowed out real artists). It was quite good writing but she relied too heavily on a single stylistic trick: repetition. Eg talking of a g&t she would say: 'Gin. Gin and tonic. And gin.'
It gets a bit much...
Yes, any literary device can be over used.. says she, she who is not a great writer anyway...not. a great. writer. anyway...
